Car Hire With a Debit Card in Iceland FAQ
Yes, we have managed to arrange a deal with two suppliers in Iceland. They will allow payment to be made on a debit card when renting a car. Most companies will require a credit card to secure the deposit amount but our suppliers will also allow this to be done on a debit card.
Our suppliers accept a variety of debit cards. The only requirement is that the name on the front of the card must match the name on the licence of the main driver. To check if your card will be accepted by our suppliers at the location you wish to hire from, please contact us.
There is the usual range of vehicles available from many suppliers. But in Iceland, more than most countries you should really consider your plans before selecting your rental car. Where do you intend to travel? What type of roads will you be travelling on? What time of year is it?
If you just intend to wonder around Reykjavik sightseeing for a few days, The smallest and cheapest of cars will do the trick. If you want to explore the country, leave the ring road onto the ‘F Roads’ then you almost certainly will need an SUV/4×4.
Do your research, road information and conditions can be checked at the road.is website.
You can rent a car in Iceland from the age of 20 years old and all the way up to 90. Not all rental car suppliers offer this, so be sure to make us aware of your age when enquiring.
Iceland is a fairly expensive country to visit, and like most other countries it gets more expensive in busy times. You should expect to pay between £150 and £400 for a small car for 7 days, between £600 and £2000 for a 4×4 vehicle depending on the time of year.
Not in most cases, Icelandic rental suppliers will accept most national driving licences. Even if they are issued outside of the EU. However, if your licence is not printed in Roman Script then you may need to provide and IDP (International Driving Permit) which is basically a translation of your licence information. As always, please check with us before making a booking.

The young lady I just booked with (Jess) has the most pleasant customer approach, she made my booking a doddle!
Maryia was very friendly, and answered all my many questions quickly. She helped us decide on the best car for our needs. The car hire firm we used (Ice Car Hire in Iceland) were great, and everything went smoothly. I'd definitely use this service again.
The only provider I found with ease for renting with a credit card. Responded to queries promptly to work out an arrangement to suit me and the supplier. Thanks!
