There has a lot been written on road trips in the States. (be sure to check out our itinerary for the east coast of the USA!), you think of Kerouac going from a Greyhound bus to the back of a truck in his travels to find the true meaning of America. Or the route shown traversing the Deep South in the 1969 classic movie Easy Rider. Though don’t worry: with Debit Card Car Hire, you won’t have to rough it. Although this itinerary includes some long stretches of open road, it is well worth the effort for adventures you have only dreamed about.
First Stop: Los Angeles
- Of course Hollywood is where so many of those dreams have been made. The guided tour of Warner Bros Studio allows you to explore back lot sets and sound stages. If you dig Friends you can visit the famous Central Park cafe and if you want to get techy discover the wonders of green screen. Maybe it is DC Universe or Harry Potter that fascinates you, you can take it all in here.
- Universal offer a similar guided tour as well as some phenomenal rides including Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Transformers™: The Ride 3-D, and Fast and Furious–Supercharged, putting you at the centre of some of the most popular movies and TV shows.
- There are also a plethora of companies offering celebrity house tour trips – try not to get starstruck!
- For an adventure a bit off the beaten track you can drive the Angeles Crest Highway from La-Canada Flintridge to Wrightwood. A real break from the hubbub of LA with tremendous views and opportunities for picnicking, biking and hiking.
Away From LA and Into the Desert: Palm Springs
- After some big screen culture it’s time to head into the desert to the oasis city of Palm Springs. Check out the downtown Palm Springs Art Gallery. Alongside the permanent collection, (there are some fascinating glass works) there are temporary shows too, plus theatrical and musical performances in the Annennberg Theatre.
- Palm Springs Aerial Tramway travels from Chino Canyon (2,640 feet) to the Mountain Station (8,516 feet) providing stunning vistas and touristic features with over fifty miles of hiking.
- Indian Canyons allow for hiking on many levels but the consensus seems to be to take your own water! Really invigorating and inspiring walk allowing a meditation on the plight of the Amerindians.
Death Valley: Can You Stand the Heat?
- Death Valley Ranch is the perfect place to stay when visiting Death Valley National Park. Here, you will find the Joshua Tree (not to be confused with Joshua Tree National Park), immortalised by U2 and despite going back in time you will be furnished with all mod cons too. But be aware that this is amongst the hottest, lowest and driest place on earth.
- Dante’s View looks down to Badwater Basin and provides quite an amazing vista.
- Similarly, Zabriskie Point makes for an outstanding sunset.
Viva Las Vegas!
- One of the first attractions you may want to experience is the High Roller, giving as it does an incredible view over Las Vegas. If you are feeling boozy rather than woozy you can have an open bar to hand with a choice of wine and chocolate to stimulate the already-wired senses!
- And of course Las Vegas really comes alive at night with dazzling neon lights illuminating the Las Vegas Strip. Downtown there is live entertainment, street artists and the astounding Fremont Street Light and Sound show.
- Another stunning attraction is the Eiffel Tower, a half-scale replica of the one in Paris. Like the High Roller you will get amazing views and temporarily apart from the Strip frenzy.
- Sky Jump Las Vegas is above the Strip by 829feet jumping from the STRAT Tower and landing on a pad at some 40mph.
- Flamingo Las Vegas is so much more that just a casino: it comes replete with 15-acre Caribbean-style pool, bunk bed suites, and steakhouse, all aiming to bring a Forever Fabulous®experience.
Back to LA to Cool Off in Santa Monica
- Santa Monica boasts three miles of white sandy beach and has been immortalised in such TV coverage as Baywatch. You will be handing the car back here and finishing up your road trip with some time by the beach before catching a flight home from LAX.
Your itinerary may have come to an end, but what a sensational almost overwhelming dizzying world of attractions combining glitz, glam, stunning desert scenery and beautiful beaches.
