September is pretty much the best month to travel just about anywhere. The kids are back in school and the prices are down, so if you’re lucky enough to be footloose – this is the month to go adventuring. Here are some intriguing suggestions for autumn travel – the best destinations in September.
Southern Africa
Many countries in Southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, have world-class lodges throughout their National Park systems. There, you can get an unparalleled view of the wild life that congregate near the watering holes as the temperatures begin to rise and water becomes harder to find. Game viewing is at its peak in September, and this is also the month to see the whales that come to breed off the coast of South Africa.
New England, USA
The six States that make up the region of New England are all quite different yet incredibly picturesque. People flock to the beaches along the coast in summer, and head north in October to see the leaves change colour, so September is the ideal month to avoid the crowds and enjoy the sights. Boston is the gateway to New England, and the best way to see the mountains of Vermont, the coast of Maine, and everything in between is to hire a car at the airport and just drive. There’s guaranteed to be a photo-op around every corner.
The Greek Islands
Mid-Summer in Corfu can be a bit much between the heat, the crowds, and the cruise ships. September is wonderful because it’s still warm enough to swim, and the evenings are refreshingly cool. Any of the Greek Islands promise a relaxing (and romantic) getaway once everyone else has gone home.
Sicily, Italy
The best way to really absorb Sicilian culture is to experience this distinct corner of Italy on foot. You need to walk the alleys and stroll the hillsides, shop the markets and sip the wines. Unfortunately, mid-summer can be just too hot for walking around and the beaches can get awfully crowded. If you travel in September, you may still get a hot spell but overall, you’re going to be much more comfortable when it comes to exploring the island’s historic towns and beautiful countryside.
The best part about travelling in September is that accommodation and car hires are easily available – and everything is cheaper than during the peak season.
Enjoy your autumn travel, and we hope you discover your own best destinations in September.
