Our 7 day Cornwall road trip itinerary will take you all over this stunning county, spanning some of the UK’s best beaches, picturesque coastal town and historic sites. There’s so much to see in Cornwall, though with this guide we’ll make sure you’ve got beaches, culture, history and even surfing covered.
Day 1: Mevaglissey
An idyllic port with endearing narrow streets and an exquisite harbour. Here a just a couple things to do in Mevaglissey:
- Mevagissey Museum displays an apple crusher and cider press, a rotating barley thresher and a historically accurate Cornish kitchen. Plus, village life in photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries.
- Model Railway toy and model shop with main 00 scale fully landscaped railway. You will find childrens’ favourite trains and an indoor visitor-operated Garden Railway.
Day 2: Falmouth
- Pendennis Castle is one of Henry VIII’s greatest coastal fortresses. It has defended Cornwall against foreign invasion since the Tudor times. Discover how the castle has developed over the years and experience the sights and sounds of battle. An interesting new exhibition looks at the way the castle played a part in Fortress Falmouth during the First World War.
- Glendurgan Garden is a special place for you to lose yourself in its three valleys full of fun for all the family. Experience the exquisite beauty of nature and take a walk down to the lovely hamlet of Durgan where you can watch both birds and boats.
Day 3: St Michael’s Mount
- Explore the castle building’s changing roles from priory to fortified castle since the 1600s.
- Designed in 1878 for Sir John St Aubyn, the delightful, terraced garden includes Aloes and Agave, Tulbaghia and Lampranthus for stimulating sights and smells.
Day 4: Land’s End
- The prehistoric standing stone MĂȘn Scryfa, Cornish for ‘stone with writing’, has been inscribed with “Rialobranus son of Cunovalus” during the medieval period.
- Long Rock Beach has wonderful views of St Michael’s Mount as well as easy access to the latter’s causeway.
- Phoenix Marine off Sennen Cove provides scenic boat trips around the gorgeous coastline of Land’s End. Visit the impressive Longships Lighthouse and meet the sometimes cheeky seals.
Day 5: St Ives
- To add a dash of culture to your Cornwall road trip visiting Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is essential. Her quite minimal sculptures speak of the Cornish coast as well as being based on natural and almost cosmic shapes and forms. The garden is also just a great place to sit and soak up the rays in the verdant greenery of its surroundings.
- And if that wasn’t enough for you culture vultures Tate St Ives features work by iconic 20th century artists who lived and worked in the town, including Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. This is combined with a contemporary programme in the new extension, currently VERY VOLCANIC OVER THIS GREEN FEATHER by Petrit Halilaj.
- St Ives Bay runs in a curved shape from the Island near the centre of town for some six miles to Godrevy Head. At the latter you will find the world-famous lighthouse that inspired the classic novel by Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse.
Day 6: Newquay
- Fistral Beach is the definitive home of British surfing due to the constant excellence of the surf it provides. So both surfers and spectators can enjoy the beach, whether on the balmy calmer days or the speedy times when the big wave Cribbar is being tackled by the top-notch surfers.
- Newquay Zoo is a space for animal magic and its conservation work is aimed to protect endangered species from extinction. There are play areas, an Oriental Garden, and a Village Farm.
