Best Vehicle Type to Hire on Holiday

by Rob Gillespie

Best Vehicle Type to Hire on Holiday

Hiring a car is an economical and convenient way to get around when you’re on holiday. It’s important, however, to choose the car that’s going to fit not only your budget, but the size of your groups and the type of driving you’re planning to do.
Here is a quick guide to what’s out there, so that you can choose the best vehicle type to hire on your next holiday (listed from low to high price-range).

Best Vehicle Type to Hire on Holiday

Mini
This is the best option if you’re travelling alone or with one other person, and need a vehicle to get around the city. Least expensive, fuel efficient and easy to park.
Examples: Fiat 500, Kia Picanto, Ford KA

Economy
Same benefits as the Mini option but with a little more room. Technically seats 5, but only comfortable for more than 2 adults on very short trips.
Examples: Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Opel Corsa

Compact
Lowest priced vehicle suitable for a family holiday. Not recommended for touring, but fine as a budget conscious option for a family staying in a major city. It’s also a better choice for couples who don’t want to squeeze into an economy vehicle.
Examples: Ford Focus, BMW Series 1, Mercedes A class

Estate
Very similar to the compact, but with extra room for luggage. Good option if you’re hauling things like strollers in and out of the car.
Examples: Ford Focus Estate, Renault Megane Estate, Seat Leon Estate

5-Seat Minivan
Perfect choice for a family of four if you’re planning to do more than city driving. Lots of room and the kids can see out the windows.
Examples: Renault Kangaroo, Citroen Berlingo, Ford Focus C-Max

Intermediate
Basically, the compact with a bit more head and leg room. May accommodate child seats and definitely with more luggage space.
Examples: Citroen C-Elysee, Skoda Octavia, Audi A4

Convertible
If you’ve always wanted to drive around with the top-down, there’s no better way to experience the exhilaration of a convertible than hiring one when you’re on vacation.
Examples: Fiat 500, Audi A3, Mini Cooper

SUV
For those who want to take the road less travelled, an SUV provides sure-footed safety and a very comfortable ride.
Examples: Nissan Juke, Audi Q3, Jeep Renegade

Standard
This is the right vehicle for a family with car seats, or a group of four adults travelling together. There’s usually plenty of space for luggage, and sufficient leg room in the back seat for longer drives.
Examples: Opel Insignia, Peugeot 508, Renault Talisman

Full-Size
Very similar to the Standard, but often with a larger engine. Less fuel efficient, but a better option if you’re going to be climbing a lot of hills or carrying a heavy load and want the extra power.
Examples: BMW 3 series, Mercedes E class, Audi A5

7-Seat Mini-Van/9-Seat Mini-Van
Comfortable and roomy for a group of friends or larger families. Consider other options for holidaying with this number of people and you’ll find vans to be a great bargain.
Examples: Volkswagen Caddy, Renault Scenic, Opel Zafira/Ford Transit, Mercedes Vito Traveliner, Renault Trafic.

The best vehicle type to hire on holiday is the one that’s going to give you enough room for your entourage and belongings, without emptying your wallet. As you can see from the extensive list of options, there’s something for everyone if you determine your needs before making your booking. We wish you happy and safe motoring, all summer long.

If you’re are looking to hire any of these vehicle types but you don’t have a credit card, get in touch with us. Call on +44 0 113 88 00 408 or fill out the enquiry form at the left hand side and we will answer any questions you may have regarding the car hire process or your payment method.
