If you are planning to travel to Cyprus, you need to know that the public transportation system is not that great therefore a car hire is recommended.

Road Info

Cyprus intercity roads and highways are in very good condition and they are constantly improved.

Seat Belt Requirements

In Cyprus, is mandatory to use the safety belt both on the font and rear seats.

Travelling With Children

In Cyprus, children under 5 are not allowed to seat in the front seats and they must be seated in child seats. The children older than 5, can be seated on the front seats but must wear appropriate child seat belt.

General Driving Rules

  • The minimum driving age in Cyprus is 18 years old
  • Talking on the telephone while driving is a serious offence
  • At junctions, drivers must give way to vehicles coming from the right unless is signalled otherwise
  • It is prohibited to use the horn between 10 pm and 6 am
  • The maximum length of car with caravan is 12m
  • Having a warning triangle is mandatory

Wacky Driving Rules

In Cyprus, it is illegal to eat or drink while driving. Even when you drink water you risk a fine of 85 euros.

Speed Limits

  • 31 mph (50 km/h) in built-up areas
  • 49 mph (80 km/h) outside built-up areas
  • 62 mph (100 km/h) on motorways
  • Minimum speed on motorways: 40 mph (65 km/h)

Driving Side

In Cyprus, you should drive on the left-hand side of the road just like in the UK. You should always overtake on the right lane.
At a roundabout, give priority to traffic approaching from the right, unless otherwise indicated.

Alcohol Limit

In Cyprus, there is a high number of random road checks, so you are advised not to drive under the influence of alcohol. If your breath/alcohol exceeds 9mg/dL you risk at least a fine and if your alcohol level exceeds 70mg/dL, you risk prison time.

Driving Licence Requirements

When driving in Cyprus EU driving licences are accepted. If you are from outside of EU, you must have an international driving licence.
