In recent years, Croatia became a top holiday destination, welcoming more than 15 million tourists every year. The request for car rental services in many Croatian locations is also on the rise.
Being a first time driver in a foreign country can be very challenging. It can be even more difficult if you come from a country where the driving side is different.

Road Info

In Croatia the roads are classified in 5 main categories:

  • The motorways (named A followed by one or two digits) with tolling
  • The Expressways which are similar to motorways but without tools and aren’t dual carriageways and with lower speed limits
  • State roads, marked with the letter D followed by 1,2 or 3 digits
  • County roads , marked with the letter Z followed by a 4 digit number
  • Local roads: L followed by a 5 digit number

Driving Rules

Seat Belt Requirements

In Croatia, seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. The children have special rules listed below.

Travelling With Children

  • Children under two must be seated in special seats and secured properly. They can be seated also in the front seat rear facing with the airbag activated.
  • Children between 2 and 5 must be seated only on the rear seats. Special secured chairs are also mandatory.
  • Children over 5 must use a booster seat secured with 3 point seat-belt. They can travel in the back seats only.

General Driving Rules

In Croatia the drivers must be aged 18 or over.

When driving in Croatia the drivers must carry the following items: reflective jackets, warning triangle, first aid kit, 2 spare light bulbs for the vehicle.

The horn must be used in moderation.

Wacky Driving Rules

It is forbidden to have a petrol can in the car.

Speed Limit

  • 50 km/h in built-up areas
  • 90 km/h on the open roads
  • 110 km/h on expressways
  • 130 km/h on motorways

Driving Side In Croatia

Just like in most of the European countries, in Croatia you should drive on the right side and overtake on the left.

Alcohol Limit

In Croatia, the there is no tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol for the novice and the commercial drivers. The limit for the standard drivers is 0.5 g/litre, however he strongly advise you not to consume any alcohol drinks before/when driving.

  • Novice drivers: 0 g/litre
  • Standard drivers: 0.5 g/litre
  • Commercial drivers: 0 g/litre
  • Drivers under 25: 0 g/litre

Driving Licence Requirements

When driving in Croatia, it’s recommended to have a European/International driving licence. The domestic licence is not enough. The driver should also carry a valid passport and proof of insurance.

  • Medical emergency: 194
  • Fire department: 193

Fuel Costs

Here are the average fuel prices recorded in 2017 in Croatia:

  • Unleaded 1.264 EUR/l with a minimum price of 1.066 EUR/L
  • Diesel 1.159 EUR/l with a minimum price of 0.944 EUR/L
  • LPG 0.617 EUR/l with a minimum price of 0.441 EUR/L
