Car hire with a debit card is now available at Darwin Airport! Darwin is the capital of Australia‘s Northern Territory, and is the main population centre of an otherwise sparsely populated state. Located right on the northern tip of the country, Darwin has often served as the key link between Asia and Australia. This has given the city a rather unique Asian influence, most notably in it’s night markets and cuisine! The city is of course named after Charles Darwin, as the first Westerners to discover it were the crew of the HMS Beagle – the same ship that had just taken Darwin on his trip around the Galapagos. The area was also already inhabited by the Larrakia people too, who hold the title to the land today.
The most popular spot to visit in Darwin is without a doubt Mindil Beach, which is host to some spectacular sunsets as you can see pictured above. During the dry season it also holds the ever popular Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, with around 200 different stalls with many different foods, goods and services. With the Northern Territory being famous for it’s crocodiles it would be a shame not to visit Crocosaurus Cove in the centre too! Home to many different reptiles, you can even swim up close with the crocodiles (behind some glass of course!). Darwin also serves as a great starting point for a journey through some of the states most impressive National Parks – such as Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge to name a few.
