Antwerp is the largest city in Belgium and the second most populous, and is most famous for it’s international port – being one of the largest in the world! The city has always had a strong history in trade and finance, especially during the city’s “Golden Age” in the 16th century. This is mainly thanks to its “bourse” – a very primitive, early version of the stock exchange. This helped skyrocket Antwerp to become the centre of the international economy and Europe’s richest city for a few decades until the banking business declined. Even today though Antwerp is famous for its diamond trade, with 85% of the world’s diamonds passing through the city.
Often overshadowed by its port and diamond trade, Antwerp is great place to visit for those interested in history and architecture. Your first port of call should undoubtedly be the Grote Markt, the city’s central square surrounded on all sides by impressive renaissance architecture, such as the imposing city Town Hall, and a number of Guild houses once home to powerful guilds and bankers. In the centre of the square lies the Brabo fountain, which depicts the Roman hero Brabo throwing a giant’s hand in reference to the city’s founding myth. Other recommendations include the Cathedral of Our Lady, with the building still unfinished despite development starting in 1352, and the beautiful Central Train Station, considered one of the best stations in the world. It’s not often you recommend the train station as one of your destinations!
