Klagenfurt Airport serves the wider state of Carinthia in Austria, and it’s capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee – the prime destination for Carinthian holidays! The city has a famous founding myth, being the site of a famous battle between a group of warriors and a fierce lindwurm – a dragon that lived in the lake terrorising the nearby area! The truth of course is not quite as exciting, and was instead founded in the 12th century as a stronghold across trading routes. Klagenfurt has since faced some pretty tumultuous times, including earthquakes, invasions, locust swarms, and was practically razed to the ground during a fire in the 16th century! Thankfully the city was rebuilt and has been mostly peaceful in recent years!
Carinthia is most well known as a premier winter holiday destination, thanks to its proximity to the southern side of the Austrian Alps. Skiing is of course the main activity of choice – with 24 different ski resorts, and a similar number of ski schools too. The slopes on the southern side are particularly famous due to how sunny they are during the winter, a rarity when skiing! That’s not all though of course, Carinthia has a plethora of winter activities, also including ice skating on the frozen lakes, winter hiking and winter wellness resorts with spas and saunas. The famous Christmas Market on Neuer Platz is a must see over the festive period too!
Klagenfurt Airport is based just a couple miles north of the city centre, and with the car hire desks straight in terminal you can be on your way immediately!
