Best Coastal Roads to Drive in Europe

by Rob Gillespie

Best Coastal Roads to Drive in Europe

There are so many fantastic coastal roads to drive in Europe that picking out the top five is pretty tough. After much deliberation and careful thought, here are our Best Coastal Roads to Drive in Europe. We chose the ones we think you may find intriguing, and which combine the very best in ocean views with unique driving experiences.

Best 5 Coastal Roads to Drive in Europe

1. The Amalfi Coast Road, Italy
Best Coastal Roads to Drive in EuropeThis 50-kilometre stretch of road winds between Sorrento and the village of Amalfi on the coast of Italy. The Amalfi coast is such a stunning example of Mediterranean beauty that it has earned a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
It’s full of hairpin bends and breathtaking views of the sea, so if you want to stay away from the dizzying edges, you’re best to travel the road from north to south. Hollywood’s been filming it for decades, so don’t be surprised if you feel like you’ve been here before.
If we had to pick the best coastal road to drive in Europe, this would be it.

2. D81 Calanches de Piana, France
Best Coastal Roads to Drive in EuropeThis is a prime example of a French “balcony road” which runs for 12 kilometres from Porto to Piana on the west coast of Corsica. The granite cliffs are spectacular, carved by the forces of wind and water into towering red sculptures. There’s very little room to pass as the road is literally a balcony, clinging to the side of the mountain.
Driving this stretch at sunset brings out the vibrant colour of the cliffs and casts otherworldly shadows across the striking landscape.

3. Estoril Coast, Portugal
Best Coastal Roads to Drive in EuropeThe drive from Lisbon to Cabo da Roca, Europe’s westernmost point, is lined with 45 kilometres of picturesque fishing villages, crashing waves and sandy beaches. The views from the cliffs at Cabo da Roca are not to be missed, and neither is the plentiful fresh seafood in the local restaurants.

4. The Military Road, Isle of Wight, UK
Best Coastal Roads to Drive in EuropeIs the number 4 Best Coastal Roads to Drive in Europe. This drive takes you around the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, along a National Trust coast with very few buildings to spoil the view. It’s only about 20 kilometres from Blackgang to Freshwater Bay, but the sight of the chalk cliffs and the expanse of the English Channel make it well worth a visit. The road was built in the 19th century under the threat of invasion by Louis Napoleon and has been battling the forces of erosion ever since. Take care and look for cliff-falls, especially after a heavy storm.

5. The Antrim Coast Road, Ireland
Best Coastal Roads to Drive in EuropeThis journey will take you from Larne to Derry, the last walled city in Ireland that remains totally intact. It follows the coast through small seaside towns, whiskey distilleries, and a host of natural wonders. The 200-kilometre drive can easily be accomplished in a day, but you’re going to want to take your time because this one makes everyone’s list of the best coastal roads to drive in Europe.

As with all European destinations, locals recommend driving these roads in the shoulder season (September/October or May) to avoid tourist busses and heavier traffic.
