We can now offer car hire with a debit card at Launceston Airport! Launceston is the largest city in Northern Tasmania, with only Hobart superseding it on the island as a whole. Named after it’s Cornish counterpart, Launceston is actually one of Australia‘s oldest cities being settled back in 1806, and sits on the confluence of the North Esk and South Esk rivers, where they become the Tamar River. These days the city prides itself as a “city of firsts”, being the first Australian city to have underground sewers, the first Australian city to be lit by hydroelectricity and the first use of anaesthetic in the Southern Hemisphere, among many others!
Launceston has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination recently, and it’s easy to see why! One of the region’s largest tourist destinations is Cataract Gorge, a river gorge just a mile out from the city centre, with a seemingly bottomless basin that has been the subject of many local myths and legends! The area has a swimming pool, a museum, the longest single span chairlift in the world, and has numerous activities available such as whitewater kayaking, boat cruises, rock climbing and even cable hang gliding. That’s just in Launceston too! Northern Tasmania is also a hotspot for skiing, with the mountain Ben Lomond offering premier Alpine skiing operations throughout the winter months, just an hours drive from the city.
Lauceston Airport is a curfew-free airport just 9 miles from the city centre, and sees over a million passengers each year. With desks in terminal, collecting your car couldn’t be more convenient!
What Debit Cards do we accept, and how does it work?
We can accept any standard Visa or MasterCard debit cards, they just need to be linked to the driver’s bank account and have the driver’s name on it. We cannot take any prepaid or top-up cards, nor Maestro or V-Pay.

It depends on the supplier, but it’s either just debited and refunded or held as a pending transaction temporarily.
You can rent any standard models from the mini size to large 9-seat passenger vans. We just can’t rent out premium cars is all.
