Car hire with a debit card is now available from Calvi Airport! Calvi is a small town on the northwest coast of Corsica, a large mountainous French island right in the middle of the Mediterranean. Only becoming part of France in 1769, Corsica was actually a part of the Republic of Genoa for the preceding 500 years, giving the island a unique influence of both French and Italian culture. Calvi is a great example of this, with the imposing medieval Citadel towering above the docks and the white Mediterranean beaches stretching across the coastline. It’s also heavily rumoured that Calvi is actually the birthplace of Christopher Columbus too, back when it was ruled by the Genoese Empire, though it’s impossible to say with certainty!
Exploring Calvi is like stepping back in time – you have the quaint winding streets and shops around the docks, all absolutely dwarfed by the huge Citadel on the coast towering above the city. Built back in the 15th century as a defence against Franco-Turkish raiders, you’d be a fool to not take advantage of the many guided tours of the castle, and you certainly wouldn’t want to miss that view! Far from the only historical building, there’s also the even older Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Serra built in the 13th century, and the eerie abandoned Village d’Occi, preserved after being deserted in the 19th century. It goes without saying of course that Calvi has some wonderful beaches too!
Calvi Airport, known also as Saint-Catherine Airport, is based just 6km southeast of the city. With car hire desks directly in terminal, it couldn’t get any easier to collect your hire car!
What Debit Cards do we accept, and how does it work?
We can accept any standard Visa or MasterCard debit cards, they just need to be linked to the driver’s bank account and have the driver’s name on it. We cannot take any prepaid or top-up cards, nor Maestro or V-Pay.
